The small village Baan Mae Sawan Luang is situated in the mountains near Mae Sariang, in the Northwest of Thailand. The village is inhabited by Karen, the largest group of hill people in Thailand. Three years ago, the village received its first primary school. The school has ample water available in the rainy season, but in the four-month-long dry season things change dramatically. Wells run dry and water is so limited that expensive bottles need to be bought. These expenditures are not budgeted. Samsara in cooperation with Rotary Chiang Mai South decided to build a huge concrete storage tank. Water is collected in the rainy season. If used in an economical way, there is enough to go through the dry season. Water pipes, a pump and taps were also provided. Samsara spent a total sum of €1255 (54,000 baht). Villagers and schoolteachers built the water storage tank within one month. The opening ceremony took place in February 2003.
